Hotel St. James offers a centrally located and relatively affordable base for exploring Midtown Manhattan, particularly Times Square and Broadway. While rooms are basic and may show their age, guests frequently praise the friendly staff and convenient location. Some reviews mention noise levels and maintenance issues, but overall, it’s considered a worthwhile option for budget-conscious travelers.
The Hotel St. James is rated as a two-star hotel, and while that’s probably fair, it’s not for reasons that would be deal breakers if you’re looking for a convenient Midtown location at a decent value. I won’t get into my thoughts on the fact that well over $300 for a single midweek night is considered a “good value” these days, because it is what it is. Given the reality of Manhattan hotel prices, this hotel is a solid option. The lobby is pleasant enough, but the real standout is the front desk staff. Everyone we encountered was professional, knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely helpful. The hallway carpets could desperately use a deep cleaning, but fortunately the room itself was clean. The hotel also uses a cleaning product or air freshener with a sweet scent that we found a little overpowering, giving the room a somewhat chemical feel. We stayed in a Superior King, which included both a microwave and mini fridge, a convenience that’s becoming harder to find. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the shower had excellent water pressure. The only truly odd experience occurred about 20 minutes before checkout. Despite having the Do Not Disturb sign on the door, someone who appeared to be from maintenance knocked and asked if we were “getting out.” We told him we’d be leaving at the 11 a.m. checkout time. It wasn’t a huge issue, but it felt a little strange and unnecessary. Overall, I’d definitely stay here again when I have plans that bring me to Midtown.
We absolutely loved this hotel. Location is amazing, just around the corner from Times Square. We had an easy access to any subway or bus station. Around the hotel you can find a lot of food trucks and nice cafes. Rooms were ok, we got very good price. Cleaning was done every day. Staff is friendly and helpful. You cannot hear any noise from outside in the room. Thank you!
Booked this hotel exclusively because of the location, and it was cheaper than other hotels around Times Square. I can't say too much about service, because the only interaction we had with staff was when we were checking in and out. That went fine. Hotel is extremely basic, meaning there is no bar, no restaurant, no fridge in the rooms (maybe there is a fridge in superior rooms, not sure), no coffee machine in the room. We knew this going in. Though it would have been nice to have a fridge and coffee maker, or at least a hotel bar - if you're not spending too much time in the room, it's fine. There is a 24/7 store next to the hotel, where you can get cold water, food or anything else.... and there's a coffee shop across the street. It is steps away from the Times Square, Broadway, comedy shows - the locations is so good it's hard to beat. Our room had a brick wall view, and it was very dark. Actually the fact it was so dark during the daytime is the only serious objection I have. I peaked into some other rooms and depending on the orientation they had more light. The noise level is zero, which is astounding for this area. Not only that, but there is no noise from other guest either, this is not a party hotel. We slept like babies every night. If I were to book again, I would ask for a differently positioned room, with natural light and a fridge.
Cute and quaint hotel around the corner from Times Square. Clean and pleasant rooms. Twighlight Zone vibes in a good way. Really enjoyed my stay. Check out the Irish Bar (Connolly’s) next door for great food and service as well.
We chose Hotel St. James because of the incredibly reasonable room rate, and location close to Radio City Music Hall, where we were seeing Jason Isbell in concert. The hotel is basic in the way of amenities, but it was very clean and our bed was very comfortable. The staff really came through for us when the blizzard hit and we had to change our travel plans multiple times. They extended our stay one night, and held the room for us for a second night without making us pay in advance in case we needed it. We ended up not needing the second night, but it was great to know we'd have a place to stay if it came to that. They also let us check out late since our plans had been in flux right up until the time we were supposed to check out. All around, a fantastic experience, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to stay near Broadway and Times Square and isn't looking for deluxe accommodations.
My family and I stayed here and really enjoyed the location and service from staff. Sebastian I believe is his name, the gentleman with the long nice hair was very nice and helpful. He even gave me a food recommendation! Thank you Sebastian, my family and I appreciated your hospitality.
We were in the best spot for Winter Storm Fern. We stayed warm. The staff educated us Floridians on what to expect. The location made it so we could still see great sights in the snow. You walk outside and to your right is Times Square!! It was central to everything we wanted to do. The bed was comfortable and our room stayed warm! Would absolutely stay here again!
Great deal for the price. The room was clean. There are a set of stairs to enter the historic hotel. Thankfully the elevators worked! The hotel rooms are heated by old fashioned radiators. You need to manually adjust them by the black nob on the lower left hand side. Call ahead with any accessibility requests ahead of time. Very simple hotel/definitely a home base for exploring times square but not necessarily a destination in of itself.
I really enjoyed staying here. It is not a luxury hotel, but it is wonderful for the price. The room was very clean, the bed was comfy and had 7 pillows. They brought me an extra soft blanket upon request. However, there is no central heating/thermostat. The room is heated by a radiator and there is an a/c unit in the window that isn't completely sealed so there can be a bit of a draft, however it is easily fixed by placing a towel over it and closing the blinds. Also, No microwave or refridgerafor in the room. Other than that, the staff are all so incredibly kind and helpful. This hotel truly is in the heart of Times Square. Minutes to almost every Broadway show you can think of! It is very safe with staff at the front desk 24/7. I really enjoyed my stay here and will most definitely book again when I come back!
The location of this hotel cannot be beat! Was about a 6 minute walk to Times Square, so close to any subways and a walk away from many other landmarks. This was also such great value. The staff were very helpful and friendly and we were able to leave our bags in the hotel before check in and after check out which was super convenient. Our biggest issue was in the room, the radiators were extremely loud and constantly leaking gas, which made a loud noise and a high pitched squeaking. We did ask for assistance with this, and nothing was really resolved so we had to stay in that room with the really loud radiator. Our room was also really on the small side, with just enough room for the bed and some walking space, which didn’t matter too much as we didn’t spend too much time in there.
