Small, value-oriented boutique hotel located in the heart of Times Square. While guests consistently praise the unbeatable location, modern amenities, and comfortable beds, the experience is heavily dependent on the room assignment, with recent stays suggesting significant variation in room cleanliness and maintenance, particularly regarding hot water and bathrooms.
I stayed at Hotel Shocard for a week and, after reading some previous reviews, I’ll admit I arrived feeling quite apprehensive. However, I can honestly say I had a completely positive experience and zero complaints. The room size was absolutely perfect for two people — especially by New York standards. It was comfortable, well laid out, and gave us enough space to properly settle in for the week without feeling cramped. Cleanliness was spot on: fresh linens, spotless bathroom, and no issues whatsoever with water, heating, or facilities during our stay. The staff were friendly and professional throughout. Check-in was smooth, and any small queries we had were handled quickly and politely. We experienced none of the issues mentioned in some older reviews — no flooding, no water problems, no alarms, and no housekeeping concerns. Everything felt well managed and organised. Location-wise, it’s fantastic — right in the heart of the city, making it easy to walk or hop on transport anywhere. For the price we paid, the value for money was genuinely excellent, especially in New York where hotel costs can be eye-watering. If you’re feeling nervous because of past reviews, don’t be. Our experience was comfortable, clean, and great value. I would absolutely stay here again.
Everyone was very nice. The room was very clean. Great location. My only complaint about the room was a lack of a full length mirror, I was just wisjing and praying I looked cute when I left the room. Other than that, very nice.
Hotel Shocard delivered a consistently good experience across the board. The rooms were comfortable, the service was friendly and helpful, and the location made exploring easy. It's a reliable choice if you're looking for a comfortable and convenient stay in the city.
If I could give 0 stars I would. Have no expectation of decent service. Management and customer service was the worst I’ve ever experienced. I booked two rooms at this hotel for my family. Due to a family emergency we had to cancel. Although booking.com was perfectly fine cancelling the managers at the hotel made it miserable. The managers claimed that booking.com did not reach out to them on behalf of both rooms. Canceled one and charged me for the other. Which does not make sense to me. If the request was processed from booking.com they should have gone through the same day. Booking.com confirmed both reservations numbers with me when they sent the request. If I was canceling day of I would understand, but it was days in advance. Willing to refund me one room and claim the other was not mentioned is a lie. I mentioned it every time I talked to both booking.com and the guest services team at the hotel. I was charged $1800 for a room I never stayed in, despite trying to cancel ahead of time and having to go back and fourth on the phone a dozen times between the two. The manager I spoke to couldn’t have cared less about anything I was trying to explain to him regarding the miscommunication between the hotel and booking.com. He was not polite or helpful. I am a manager in hospitality and have been in the industry for 15 years. If you’re business is desperate enough to be so unkind and charge someone on behalf of there mistakes and booking.coms mistakes during the holiday season during a family emergency, it’s because your business is hurting. From an individual trying to plan a holiday trip with my family, to not out $1800 during an emergency is a relatively heartless group of individuals which is probably why you have 3.8 starts and a bunch of recent bad reviews. Don’t expect quality customer service.
Arrived at the Shocard to check in on Friday (Black Friday) and was told the check-in system was not working and that we could not check in. We decided to leave and occupy our time and come back an hour later (which forced us to cancel dinner reservations). Upon our second arrival, the check-in system was still down and we were not permitted to check-in. By this time, it was almost 5:00pm and we needed a place to shower and change before seeing a play at 7:00p. The room had already been paid for through Booking.com, but I decided to find other accommodations. Understand that this is a small hotel and not a large chain like Hilton, they do not have the customer service of larger brands and apparently their systems are not reliable. I would recommend booking elsewhere.
I was attending an event near lower 42nd street and my sister traveling with me booked this hotel. We stayed in room 309. The room was clean, but there are no services at this hotel and only queen or king beds. So, I ended up sharing the bed with my sister. They held our bags because we could not check in until 4:00, so we could get something to eat. Most hotels take a credit card upon arrival to cover any incidentals, this hotel charges $150 a night security deposit in addition to any hotel fees and taxes that were prepaid using booking.com. The security deposit is held for 5-7 days, so I recommend not using a debit card. Since our room faced a rooftop, I left the shades up and enjoyed the sounds from the electric whatever is behind that wall to the left. There was probably 18-24 inches on 3 sides of the bed with the headboard was the 4th side. Tiny bathroom covered in penny tiles on all sides with plenty of hot water almost to the point of scalding. The restaurant in the building serves breakfast at cost and I awoke to the smell of toast and bacon through the heater(?). This is a good example of buyer beware and read all the fine print and check the reviews. If I was spending the night with my husband and only going to a show and dinner it might have been a better experience if I were 30 years younger.
I came here for 1 night for work and would totally stay here again. The room 502 was super tight but the water gets hot, the bed is comfy, the TV works, and the heater kept me nice and toasty just how I like. The hotel is attached to an Irish Pub and they give you 1 free drink each day you’re there (vouchers provided by the hotel) and 10% off the bill. Elizabeth is the absolute BEST!
Super location, however, the room quality is lacking and the price is too high. The hot water in my room was inconsistent and sometimes required up to 20 minutes of running it in order to come to temperature. The HVAC was also inconsistent. The temp in my room ranged from 65 to 78 during my stay even though I had it set to automatically cool to 70. Overnight, I was kept awake by booming music coming from downstairs. I did notice that the main lady at the front desk is very helpful and friendly, so I did appreciate that.
We had an amazing stay here! I think a lot of people who complain just really did not pay attention when booking. It’s made very clear on the website that the rooms are tiny and that there’s a bar right below. They don’t try to mislead you at all about those facts so the people complaining just clearly didn’t read. The room was plenty big for us and was clean. Room service was great and the front desk staff were always super friendly. We were right on the second floor above the bar and it really wasn’t bad. You’re in a big city there’s always going to be noise. We slept comfortably and never had a single issue while there. The only mildly annoying thing was that sometimes the outside smells got inside and it would be stinky for a few minutes here and there but it didn’t ruin our stay at all since it only happened a few times during our 5 night stay. We were even able to check in early and store our bags there when we checked out since we had a late flight. The location is absolutely amazing too! We could walk right out into Times Square and had the subway right there for all our traveling. We had the best time in New York and would 100% stay shocard again. Yes it’s expensive but it’s New York, you’re going to pay a hefty price no matter where you go and shocard was still much cheaper than the rest. Again I really think a lot of the negative reviews just come from ignorance and lack of research. I would suggest this hotel to anyone!
Rooms are minuscule. As everything in the most cursed part of this city (Times Square), wildly overpriced for what it is but at least it’s close to Broadway and trains. No smart tv in rooms so you have to watch movies/ shows in whatever tiny screen you brought. The service is glacial. Took 45min to bring us an ICE BUCKET but when it’s time to check out they have no problem charging you $25 for being 10min late (which is what gave me the ick and kinda threw the few good aspects of the experience to the back of my mind). They do give you free drink vouchers at check in tho, which was nice. Overall, okay but insane price for its reality.
