The Gallivant Times Square Hotel receives mixed reviews, with many guests citing issues with cleanliness, outdated facilities, and unreliable service. While praised for its convenient location and affordability, recurring problems with room conditions, heating, and unresponsive staff significantly detract from the overall experience. Several guests have reported unresolved issues such as incorrect billing and concerns about hygiene.

From the moment we arrived this stay was extremely disappointing and if I could rate it a zero I would. We arrived slightly before check-in and were rudely instructed to sit and wait our turn in the lobby, where the seating area smelled strongly of cigarette and cigar smoke. While waiting, we overheard another guest demanding to speak with management because they had reportedly been without hot water for three days. Unfortunately, the condition of the property did little to improve our impression. There was visible water damage throughout both the hallways and our room, damaged wallpaper that appeared to have been painted over rather than repaired, a non-functioning extractor fan, and door frames that had deteriorated to the point where additional brackets had been installed around the locks so they could close. The overall condition of the hotel raised serious concerns about maintenance standards and possible mold. The most troubling part of our experience came after checkout when we were charged a smoking fee despite neither my wife nor I being smokers. We spent nearly three weeks attempting to contact the hotel, first to find out what the charge was for and then to dispute the charge. Calls to Accounts, the Duty Manager, and the Hotel Manager consistently went unanswered, and we were only able to obtain a response via email. When the hotel finally replied, they refused to investigate further and simply stated that the charge was valid. After I explained that neither of us smoke, they provided a detector report that allegedly showed smoking activity within 30 minutes of our arrival and never again for the remainder of our stay. Given the strong smell of smoke throughout the lobby and common areas, as well as the fact that neither of us smoke, I questioned whether the reading could have been inaccurate or triggered by environmental factors. Rather than addressing these concerns, the hotel refused to acknowledge any alternative to the report and effectively dismissed our explanation. What concerns me most is the apparent lack of any meaningful dispute process. Guests are expected to accept the charge without question, even when there is a genuine disagreement regarding the circumstances. After reading a number of other reviews describing similar experiences with smoking fees, I am left with serious concerns about the validity and how these charges are administered and reviewed. We will never be returning to this hotel and urge any future travellers to review your bill before leaving the premises.

An experienced and seasoned traveler knows a gem when they find one. The Gallant is a gem. The location is fantastic. A 5 to 10 minute walk to any Broadway or off Broadway show. Terrific dining options and easy access to transportation. Plus being in Midtown, here a 30 minute walk to some of the best neighborhoods in the city both up towards the park and down towards the village. Just an incredible spot. All that for one of the lowest priced hotels in the city. The staff was extremely nice. From Irena at the front desk to the housekeeping woman who greeted me every time I passed her in the hallway and asked me if I needed anything for the room. Just a very nice group of people. But you don’t get a great location and a very inexpensive room without a trade-off. And the trade-off is that the hotel has some cosmetic issues that seem a little dated. From worn carpeting in the hallways too some dings on the furniture or on the walls. Personally, I plan to come back here as I think it’s one of the best deals in the city and I’m gonna be sad when they renovate this hotel and boost the prices by 100% or more. If you do book the gallivant, I would reach out and just see if you can have them check out the room for you in advance. That’s what I did and they booked me into a very clean lovely room. My room was up on the 11th floor and was very quiet. The mattress was brand new as far as I could tell, and believe me I always check the mattresses, and the bathroom was very clean. I really liked the room, but it was small and a bit utilitarian. You’re not gonna have a keurig coffee machine or a complementary fridge. Again, if those things mean something to you, then you’ll be disappointed. But if you’ve done a bit of traveling, and you value location, service, and a good price. Then I think you’ll find the gallivant is a gem too.

The service at this hotel was extremely disappointing. I was wrongly charged a $500 USD smoking fee for allegedly smoking inside the room, which is completely impossible because I do not smoke. I tried to resolve the issue directly with the alleged manager, whose attitude was unhelpful and dismissive from the beginning. Instead of offering any real solution or support, I was simply told to contact my bank, while the hotel completely avoided taking responsibility for the situation. It has now been three weeks since my stay, the charge has still not been resolved, and the hotel continues to refuse accountability. I am also attaching a photo of the manager due to the poor handling of the situation and lack of professionalism. Beyond this issue, the hotel itself was very underwhelming. The rooms are extremely small, the facilities are very basic, and the service overall was poor. For the same location and price range, there are many better hotel options with significantly better service and accommodations. I definitely would not recommend staying here.

Wish we had read reviews before booking. Rooms were ...... Interesting. Dirty. Walls covered in yellow liquid stains... Air conditioning broken. Lobby is approximately 80 degrees with the heat pumping to keep you out of it. Bunk beds were hardly stable. Basically just sheets on the bed. The door to the room closed but you could still see into the room completely through a large crack. They will not answer the phones and the lines are all disconnected. One line worked but we called it while in the lobby and the phone didn't ring. Location is very convenient!

I just wanted to add a reasonable review here. I was terrified I mad e a mistake booking it after reading all the terrible reviews. I do want to clarify that I think I have lower standard than some. This hotel was the cheapest price by far and if you are just looking for somewhere to sleep for a few nights it’s perfect. Yes the rooms are small, yes it’s dated and a bit neglected but the fact is, it provided a comfortable place in the heart of Times Square for up to crash between our outings. The staff was incredibly friendly and the location can’t be beat

This hotel is absolutely disgusting. My wife and I rented for 4 days because she is part of an event nearby. We thought hotel in time square couldn't be that bad. This hotel is beyond run-down. Our room had mold ans water flies in the bathroom. Side bed lamps that didn't work. There's a very nasty smell in the halls. Furniture in room was old, batterea, and needed to be replaced quite frankly. Old nasty thermostat on wall i wouldn't touch with a yard stick. We should have left when we arrives a couple was complaining they were.in there third room of the day over various problems from conditioning to malfunctioning tv. Be aware if you're just looking to party for some might not be bad for the.price.but for piece of mind setting after working hard this place isn't that Very irky feeling in room and hall. Oh an no ice machines work and I didn't see a vending machine will ne leaving in morning to better situation

It’s good if you’re a solo traveler and the location is super convenient but otherwise.. not worth it. The cleanliness of the room needs so much attention and improvement. It was honestly gross to shower. Service is also pretty 50/50.. depends on who’s working and what mood they’re in…. They also have an insane amount of junk fees such as tax % per night!! The base pay for my room was $350 and total ended up being almost $500 just with taxes and fees. Really would urge to look for better places to stay.

I don’t know how to say….. I uploaded what I have seen in room 402 on first day. I think I’ll find more during my stay ? But location is excellent. You can spend your time at the middle of Manhattan. Why do you need to be crying about the room decoration? You can go out and enjoy the city until midnight. You will stay in room just laying on a bed until beer and wine in your brain go out. Staff is kind and friendly. You can feel you’re welcome. Price is far cheaper than other hotels in same location. I have nothing to blame. But I need to say better you contract fast sped wireless service because WiFi in hotel is as slow as 20 years ago. You know price is really good, but it compromises something.

Stayed here in October, first room was small and felt like a jail cell and there were roaches. Also, Side note, got to the hotel early they said they could get me in a room early for $100 extra... I said yes sure. I came back down after seeing the roach and said. I'll wait for my normal check in time that I dont want the room. Front desk proceeded to tell me I can't have that refund of the $100 that was JUST charged to me by them because I used Expedia ( this was a lie that I found out through Expedia) front desk said... ill put you in a better room. It was a bigger dirtier room. Wall switches were dirty... stains in the closet, desk chair was filthy to the point I put a towel over it to not sit on it directly. Bugs in the bathroom. It was a nightmare. I unfortunately had things to do in the city so I didn't have time to argue and move again. Once I got home from my trip, I too tried calling and no one would answer. Finally got through to an operator and never heard from them again. Seems like this is their MO. Reported to Expedia about this location as well. Sounds like they are doing shady business here. Will never stay there again. All they negative reviews here ring true. Skip this place. Needs new management.

We are here now. I booked the family suite for my mother, my daughters and myself. Upon check in, I was permitted to check in early, for a $50 up charge, which I gladly paid. Check in was quick and smooth. We politely asked if there was breakfast down here in the lobby, the response was abruptly given the response of “You can find breakfast outside”. Ok, moving on. Still excited to be in NYC We are by far not hotel snobs. The room was spacious. Quickly we realized that the top bunk on the bunk beds was certainly not safe for my daughter.. so flimsy. We just put the mattress down on the floor instead. Also, not a problem and moving on. It didn’t take long to discover that the shower drain had a bunch of bugs coming out of it. Like, a lot. We covered the drain with the ice bucket to prevent more from coming into the shower, shut the bathroom door and then notified the front desk. They apologized and said they would take care of it while we were away. Which they did. Smelled like bleach when we returned but no more bugs… until throughout the evening. My mother tried to prep the coffee pot for the morning and it wouldn’t work. Front desk stated they would bring us a different one right away, it never did arrive. That night, no matter how much we tried to get the radiators to work, we just couldn’t get heat. In the morning, we asked the front desk to please have someone look at it while we were at breakfast. Again, they never had done it by the time we returned in the afternoon. Housekeeping knocked on the door while we were there and so kindly brought us a new coffee pot when we asked, as well as extra blankets because we expressed how cold the room was and she notified maintenance right away. The technician came within minutes and said the radiators and hearing was definitely not working and we needed to switch rooms. When we went to move into the new family room provided, we were met with a supervisor who informed us we would be much happier if we just stayed in our original room and he brought us a space heater instead. Seeing the condition of the proposed new room, we agreed we were ok with that as long as we got a heater put into the room and he took care of the shower bug issue again like the previous day, because they were starting to return through the drain again, He did very promptly. The location is good for the hotel, just very disappointed with so many other aspects of this hotel. I’m sure in its day, it was great but they have really let the condition fall apart and it seems like they are just piecing tiny fixes one at a time for major problems. If you are planning a trip to NYC, I’m sorry but you won’t be happy here and with I her chosen differently when planning.
