A Special Stay

My wife and I took her parents to New York for two nights, and while we are used to staying in mid-range hotels, this was a special treat that lived up to the billing and was worth the price. The staff were incredible on all fronts. From the moment we checked in, through drinks and dining, to the butler service (yes some rooms have butler service,) we felt an even, but non-intrusive helping hand. When we arrived, our rooms were not yet ready, but the door men, and front desk hopped into action, taking our bags, offering lunch ideas, and even water and umbrellas for our exploration. Even though the property is only a block from Broadway, which we avoid like the plague, the location as surprisingly quiet and allowed easy access to the hub-bub but also to quitter locales to the east like Bryant Park, etc. The lobby was beautiful and comfy with amazing people watching especially right before the theatre and had coffee available until late morning. There was also a lobby bar with friendly staff and incredible drinks (Bloody Mary ice cubes anyone?!) There’s also some dining options, including a second floor restaurant with live jazz in the evenings and another bar. I don’t normally suggest hotel food in New York, but this was one offered one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Order the cod with stuffed calamari and relax with an excellent cocktail while listening to the jazz. Honestly, it’s dumb to say in NYC, but you don’t have to leave the hotel to have a great visit and that’s what makes this spot so fulfilling. That said, the location was perfect for exploring, either on foot or by metro, especially given it’s relative quiet and calm so close to Times Square. Now for the room itself, I should mention we were upgraded one level from a standard to a junior suite, but even in NYC that label can lead to a room where you can barely walk around the bed. That was definitively not the case here, the room was practically palatial and extremely comfortable to-boot. The bed itself offered an excellent sleep with tons of pillows, a nightly turn-down service, and excellent black-out curtains that combined with the double-paned windows to provide for excellent relaxation. I didn’t work from the room, but the couch and desk were both large and near lots of plugs. The bathroom was gigantic with rainfall showers, heated toilet seats, double sinks and bidets. However, when you go to pay the rate, you may say “for this, I expect over-the-top amenities. Well, those were there too. The rooms came with an iPad from where you could control lighting, set wake-up calls, play music, and even order up a shoe-shine, laundry, and shirt pressing while sipping your in-room Nespresso. Again, generally I use my NYC room as a launching point to other things, and no more than a place to put your feet up and lay your head. The Chatwal goes so much further in every area, form service to food to relaxation and a feeling of quiet home. If you have the means, this is a special spot.

BEWARE

While all of the people who worked there were kind and accommodating, the hotel is a disaster. Here's a sampling 1. I saw three different repairmen. Day one, the toilet wouldn't flush. Day two I had to take a COLD SHOWER because the hot water nozzle was broken. Day three I had to shower standing in dirty water because the tub stopper was stuck closed. 2. The automatic shades wouldn't open and you couldn't really do it manually. The room was so dark that you couldn't see what was in your suitcase. The good news is that the very nice people who work there gave me a discount because of all the problems. 3. To the extent I could see, the walls were scuffed and the carpet had stains. 4. The elevator buttons worked only sporadically. Usually you had to press five times, wait, and then press a bunch more. 5. One day the coffee in the lobby was so weak it was like colored water. The next day it was cold.. 6. On the first day, my daughter's room was not ready until after 6 p.m!!!

Never wanted to leave

We stay in a lot of hotels and this gem was warm, quiet welcoming with a comfortable bed and swanky decor which really made me feel like a 1920’s Hollywood starlet. Great job staff for smoothing over glitches. Housekeeping staff was tardy both days and messed up our schedule sadly, but otherwise perfect. Bar has amazing fresh cocktails and live jazz twice a week

i spent two nights at the chatwal, and it was my best stay ever in the city. from the moment you stepped into the property. breakfast was amazing at the restaurant, they had the best omelet. staffs there were top notch, and service we received there were first class service. the hotel is in the prime location and only a block away from time square. the size of the room is spacious, and has world class amenities. AC/lighting/curtains can all be control by the Ipad inside the room. The Chatwal is definitely on my to go place when i am in new york city next time. thank you for giving us a unforgettable stay.
